What type of microphone would I need to hook up to my camera?

I'm looking for accurate recording microphone for musical purposes that has the correct jack that will plug into my camera. My Nikon D5100 has jacks on the side, 2.5mm headphone jack, HDMI, mic(?) and A/V output. That's what it says anyway. I need to know if I can get a mic with the correct male piece that will go into my camera. Does such a mic exist?

Isn't it sort of obvious that the microphone jack goes into the mic port?

What does your user manual say? That should be your first place to look

Get a mic with a 3.5mm jack.
Plug it into the external mic input.
