What things should I keep in mind after I get a camera?
I've been interested in photography for a very long time. Recently, I got an used Nikon D5100 from my cousin, but I'm not sure about how to take care of it. Do you have to replace lenses? How do you clean the camera? Please give me some tips and things I should look out for.
The three things you need to know to take good photos are Exposure, Lighting, and Composition.
Buy the Nikon video "Fast, Fun, and Easy" ver 7, which will cover your camera. It will go a long way in teaching you about your camera.
Also, pick up Bryan Peterson's book "Understanding Exposure" for more info about how exposure works.
And, read the manual about taking care of your camera. If you did not get a manual, you can download one from the Service/Support/Download section at www.nikonusa.com
You don't have to replace the lens unless you need one having a different capability, or want to buy a better quality lens. Some folks only ever use one lens on their DSLRs, which is OK, while others buy several.
You may want to take it down to a local camera shop - they should do an initial cleaning for a minimal charge. In addition the D5100 will automatically clean the sensor - press the menu button and go to your camera's Setup menu, then scroll down to "Clean image sensor." It will give you several options for automatic regular sensor cleanings (when you start up, shut down, etc.).
Then, in addition to the user's manual (which you should definitely read), check out "Nikon D5100 - From Snapshots to Great Shots" by Rob Sylvan. It's a great supplemental guide that really illustrates what your camera can do. It even has exercises at the end of every chapter.
I hope that helps. Have fun with your new camera!
