I have nikon D3100 and i would like to buy the speedlight for it, what would you recommend? Do you think Nikon SB-700 is good?

Sb700 is not only good, but great.

you can have your way with sb400 but sb700 should be more than enough for most situations.

depending on what you wanna do with the speed light i could give other suggestions. But since you didn't mention what you wanna do, i can say sb700 is well-rounded best option (however pricey)

The SB700 is one of Nikon's all singing all dancing TTL speedlights. Good for auto flash on camera. Not a great deal of use off camera as part of the Nikon AWL/CLS system because your camera's built-in flash does not support it & can't act as a commander.

If you really want to learn to light, I suggest getting a fully manual flash rather than a TTL (auto) flash. It will be cheaper & more consistent than a TTL flash (like most things Auto, TTL gets it wrong on occasions, & if you don't know how to light, you won't know how to put it right).

Although I have Nikon SB600 & 800 speedlights, I principally use a cheaper Yongnuo YN560 flash - a fraction of the cost of a SB700 at £50, but as good as it in terms of power output, head zoom, bounce/swivel etc.

You really want to be using flash off camera too, unless you can bounce it off a neutral wall/ceiling. On camera flash is harsh & on axis.

Of course, you can use the SB700 in manual mode too as well as TTL.

The SB - 700 is beyond good. I'd go for it.
