What should I include in a camera library?
I'm starting a little camera library where people can check out cameras to use. What cameras do you think would be best to include? I'm aiming for cheaper film cameras (like toy cameras, leicas, etc). I have a minolta x-370, yashica fx3 super 2000, reusable disposables, lomo fisheye, and a nikon D50 to name a few to start out with. How do you think I should expand?
Cool idea! I would NEVER loan out my own cameras though - too personal for me and if the person isn't trained in how to operate the camera they could easily cause major damage to it.
I recommend that you simply include very inexpensive cameras and build up a variety of them for people to try out. If an inexpensive camera gets broken it isn't as bad as if an expensive one does, right?
Btw: where did you get this idea? I've never heard of such a thing.
Well, Leicas are not cheap cameras.
You will need lenses and flashes for any of the SLR cameras, Insurance to cover losses/theft/damages, and film (to sell).
If you read all of the "accidents" people have with their cameras on here, what you are wanting to do is something I would not do.
I would say loan out only one "system" if possible. K-mounts like Pentax, Ricoh, Chinon, etc are great because you have a huge variety of high quality and cheap gear that is very interchangeable. Get a bunch of old cheap Ricoh cameras for next to nothing, then put some decent glass on them.
Still, as others said, its a risky business, if you equipment breaks and you are not covered, you're basically screwed.
