What setting to put my nikon d3000 on to take sports photos in a gym?
I have a Nikon D3000 with the 55-200mm lens. I love taking pictures of my kids playing soccer, and 75% of the pictures come out great. But now my daughter is playing basketball and the pictures don't come out as great. There's a blur, lighting is not like outside at all.
I'm a BEGINNER so please don't give me a bunch of suggestions I don't understand, or other items I SHOULD purchase. Please help me work with what I already have. Any suggestions would be great.
You need a faster lens (one with a larger maximum aperture). You should also read a couple basic photography books like " Understanding Exposure. "
I know you don't want to purchase anything new, but the lens you have simply will not work for indoors action shots.
The good news is that your camera is fully capable of shooting basketball indoors
All you have to do is set your cameras ISO to 3200 and deal with any noise in post. Noise is always the better choice over blur caused by using too slow a shutter speed when capturing action.
You will also want to set the cameras white balance to match the lighting indoors. You can easily create a custom white balance with a sheet of white paper and following the instructions on page 83 of your user manual
The bad news is that you really need a faster lens and they are not inexpensive.
Here is a sample basketball shot shooting with a Nikon set to 3200 ISO using a f/2.8 lens
Your 55-200 mm lens has a wide open aperture of f/5.6 at 200 mm. That is two full stops slower than the f/2.8 lens I use when shooting basketball
