How to take action/sports photos and keep the subject in focus?

I set my Nikon D5000 to dynamic range mode and I have to choose which of the 11 focus points I want to use. However when I take pictures of someone or something moving it's hard to get the focus point to be on the subject and when I take the picture the point was somewhere else and the background is in focus but not the subject. My camera has a 3D tracking mode too but not in M exposure mode.

Put auto focus on continual and subject in centre…
also, depending on the distance, put the aperture on something like f/5.6 to f/8…

When I'm shooting sports, I use the AF-L button to hold the focus on a certain player by keeping my thumb on that button.
Look on page 43 under "subject tracking", Auto Focus Continuous (AF-C) on page 54 and 155 of your user manual for other information.
