Well, first things first. The kind of camera you want is called an entry-level DSLR, not a professional camera. Those are much more expensive.

As for the camera itself, Canon or Nikon are fine choices. You can't really go wrong with either, but the choice between the two brands should be decided by your own personal preference. Asking the people of Y! A is sure to get you some biased answers, but it won't help you unless you test out the cameras yourself. So I would recommend heading over to a local electronic/camera store to try out the cameras. Decide which one is most comfortable for you to use.

The Canon T2i is a fantastic Camera, along with the Nikon 5100. They are both great brands. Its been debated for years and years, and there's no brand that is clearly better than the other, but what is nice about the T2i is that it captures 18 mega pixel photos, 1080p video at cinema quality 24fps. Very very nice camera.
Hope this helps!

If you are all about quality and clarity, invest more in lens than in camera body. Buy a cheaper body such as Nikon d3100 or even Nikon d5000 and get a better quality lens. The best general purpose lens is Nikkor 24-70 f2.8 but that might be a bit too expensive for you. If you are going to shoot mostly portraits, friends and family, get a Sigma 50mm f1.4

There are great cameras not under $1, 000. The 60MP $42, 000 Hasselblad is one of them. Great camera!

Picture quality and clarity are the responsibility of the photographer. The camera is only a tool. All dSLRs have the capability to capture any kind of picture you can imagine of. You just have to know exactly what you're doing.

D3100 or D5100. My recommendation if you have budget, go for Nikon D5100. If you're new to DSLR and has limited budget, the Nikon D3100 is still fun to learn with. Image quality is probably almost similar except that Nikon D5100 has the Nikon D7000 sensor so it will perform better at low-light situation. If you love shooting videos, go for D5100! Nikon clearly engineered the camera for video functions. The swivel LCD display and external microphone support will come in handy. If you have limited budget, the Nikon D3100 still favourable for video. Although it doesn't have a microphone input jack, the camera can records HD movie at 1080 / 24fps. Both Nikon D3100 and D5100 can autofocus when recording videos.
