What lenses work on the Nikon D5000?

Thanks!

There should be a lens compatibility chart in your manual for Nikon brand lenses.
You need lenses designed for Nikon cameras, which include Nikon brand lenses and 3rd party lenses from Tokina, Sigma, and Tamron (but you need to buy the Nikon mount lenses from those manufacturers).
The biggest issue you will face is your camera doesn't have an internal focus motor to focus the lens. Therefore, you need lenses that are designated AF-S if you want autofocus to work. These lenses have the focus motor built into the lens itself, so it doesn't need a focus motor in the body. Nikon lenses designated AF or sometimes AF-D require the camera body focus motor, which the D5000 lacks, so they will not autofocus.
But those lenses will still focus manually, and will work in all other regards.
AF-S is a designation for Nikon brand lenses only.
If you buy 3rd party lenses, such as those from Tokina, Sigma, or Tamron, Tokina lenses with autofocus motors will be designated DX II, Sigmas will be designated HSM, and you will have to look at the Tamron specs for each lens to see if they have a focus motor or not.
Also, your camera is a DX format. It will work either DX and FX type lenses. FX lenses are also known as full frame, or 35mm format, but the AF-S caveat still applies.

Any Nikon lens made since 1960 can be used on your D5000 but only Nikon's AF-S lenses will auto focus on it.
