You create a "photography" page, but know nothing about lenses.Hm.
Nikkor 50mm 1.8 or 1.4.
Nothing wrong with a D50 - I have one (along with a D300 & D100).
A good portrait lens is the 50mm f1.8 or the 85mm f1.8. As the D50 has a focus motor in the body, the AF versions of these are fine (not need to splurge out the extra on the AF-S versions).
70 - 200mm 2.8 Nikkor
Nikon 105mm f/2 dc is one of the most used portrait lenses. Check out the review from Ken Rockwell

Portraits? 50mm should do it with the D50. The cheapest is the 50mm f/1.8.It's not guaranteed to make you get fabulous senior pics right away though. User ability still affects picture quality more than anything else.
