What is the better camera?

I have narrowed it down the following 3 choices, which is the best out of the three?

1.) Canon - EOS Rebel T2i 18.0-Megapixel DSLR Camera with EF-S 18-55mm Lens

2.) Nikon - D3100 14.2-Megapixel Digital SLR Camera

3.) Sony - SLTA57K 16.1-Megapixel DSLR Camera with 18-55mm Lens

Both Canon and Nikon make nice cameras. The best thing to do is visit an actual camera shop (not bestbuy/walmart) and try the different models within your budget to see which feels the best to you AND they can answer your questions about the cameras. I bought a Canon for its ergonomics/feel/menu and control layout and a fellow photog chose Nikon for the same reason… It is about personal preference.

The one thing to remember is to budget in extra money to cover an extra battery, memory cards, camera case, a USB memory card reader, and taxes (these can add another $200-$250 to the entry level camera price).

If you are semi-experienced, go with the Canon EOS Rebel T2i. I've tried this camera and its amazing. It also takes great video. It looks professional, but it is also very user friendly to those less experienced. Its decently priced for the quality, around 800$, but if you are VERY experienced and have been in the business a while, I would not get any of these. Next up in the lineup of the best ones is The Nikon D3100. Although you are calling it a "Digital SLR", its the same thing as a DSLR. One of my friends owns this camera, and I particularly do not like this camera, but she is just getting into photography and it is perfect for her. I find it kinda flimsey and its a little behind on features compared to most DSLRs out there today. It's priced great for a Nikon, around 550, this is a brand I completely trust and I own 2 myself, although this camera just isn't as good as others in my opinion. The Sony SLTA57K is priced rather high for a Sony, around 650, and I have never liked Sony. This camera is just a step above your basic point and shoot camera, but does offer some features and decent picture quality. For your money, the Cannon is the way to go. Also, Cannon cameras seem to last forever. I have a have a 1981 Cannon AE-1 SLR that still works and I still use to this very day.

Why not the Nikon D3200?

It would be far better than any others on your list.

The D3200 is only $50 more than the D3100. Don't spend $650 to save $50.

The canon/nikon choice is purely preference, but more megapixels will only matter if you're doing a lot of cropping or making gigantic prints. The canon does not shoot video I do believe, whereas I think the nikon does.

More Canon Fanboys have answered so far than Nikon. The truth is that it doesn't matter.

The Sony's better for video, but the only way to find the best is to handle them and find out for yourself - this is where your local dealer is your friend.
