What is a '8-105mm f/3.5-5.6 DX VR Nikkor Lens'?
I'm buying a Nikon D7000 and most include this type of lens. What is this lens used for and what does 8-105mm and f/3.5-5.6 DX VR mean?
It is actually an 18-105 lens. It is the standard kit lens for the D90 and D7000. The lens is not an exciting one, but a competent performer that covers wide angle to mid-tele focal lengths. This lens will do 95% of anything you'll ever need to do. The only drawback is that it adds $300.00 to the kit price, if you already own Nikkor lenses order the body only.
The lens is an 18-105mm. That's the focal length range from 18mm (wide) to 105mm (mid range telephoto). The f/3.5-5.6 is the smallest f/stop available while shooting. It ranges from 3.5-5.6 through the zoom range. 3.5 at 18mm to 5.6 at 105mm. The DX means it is made for camera bodies that use an APS-C sensor as opposed to a full frame (FX) sensor. The VR is Nikons Vibration Reduction that for most lenses results in being able to shoot 2-3 stops slower without blurring from camera shake.
Now what does all that mean? If you're going to drop the money on a nice camera, and the D7000 is a nice camera, do a little reading and learn to use that camera to it's full potential.
Oh, what would I use the lens for? Anything that doesn't involve low light situations. Why? Read up on f/stops.
