It is just fine.

It has many more features than most beginners had on 35 mm SLR's did back in the days of film, so this camera should keep you busy for years and years.

Just use the cameras light meter to determine exposures and soon, you too will be happily making great photos.

It's a good camera to start with.

Ignore the first answer. It's rubbish. I got that answer for my question on gorillapods. (Still open).
I got the D3000 when I was a beginner, and I slowly taught myself how to use it (without the manual). I know almost all of the features now, and how it all works, half a year after I received it.
I'd say it's ideal as long as you are prepared to learn. It's a brilliant camera for such a good price.
May I suggest buying the D3100 as it is the newer model, with better features (such as video recording - maybe useful).

Not bad but for a little extra you get the vastly superior d3100

The nikon d3100 is far superior to the d3000. For starters, the d3000 doesn't have live view, which for beginners. Is a big deal. The nikon d3100 also has much better image quality, has video capabilities, has a higher resolution, better color depth ( recognizes about 10percent more colors), has Way lower noise at high ISO (which just means the pictures are less grainy when you shoot at higher ISO), and its lighter.
good riddance to the d3000!

I was actually in the same situation as you last week and I bought the Nikon D3100.It's only $100 more and in the long run I think it's going to pay off. For instance the Nikon D3000 doesn't have auto focus so its not very beginner friendly. My Nikon D3100 has an auto focus option that you can turn on if you don't want to worry about having to focus the camera all the time or if someone who doesn't know how to use a SLR camera takes a picture with it. I would totally recommend the Nikon D3100.

I recommend the D3100 because of the auto focus, learning with manual focus will be harder for you. The D3100 also offers more features than the D3000, that's why it got of my list. Other cameras I suggest are the Canon EOS Rebel XSi, and the Canon EOS Rebel T1i.
