What do I need to make a Nikon D3100 ready to shoot?

Well i'm about to buy a Nikon D3100 but I need to know what I have to buy for it. The minimum requirements! Like do I need to buy a battery or a memory. Then what kind of memory. Also does Best Buy sell it in stores or just online? I WANT THE RED ONE.

They all come with a battery and usually a basic kit lens. You will need to buy a memory card; 4 GB should be good enough to start. It is a good idea to get a case or bag for it as well.

Red one? I don't think Nikon makes colorful bodies, just plain old black.
If you buy the D3100, I believe it comes packaged with the 18-55 kit lens which is pretty good. The only thing you will need is an SD memory card. An 8 gigabyte card, or larger; class 6, or better; will work fine. Get a brand-name card like Lexar or SanDisk. No name, or store-branded cards may cause problems.

A degree in rocket science to make sense of the control panel.

I would suggest at least a 4GB SDHC Card to take a good amount of photos. One battery is fine. It might also save you a lot of time to read the User Manual and learn how to operate the camera. Also educating yourself about photography and understanding terms like Aperture, Shutter Speed, ISO, etc.

A memory card is all you need if it comes with the lens. I recommend SanDisk Extreme if you plan on doing any video or continuous shooting. And yes they do make the Nikon D3100 in red now. I've seen them in a store.

One extra battery can be useful & if you want to shoot movie get a fast memory card class 10 or you might have some problem. A good way is to have memory card for movie and memory card for photography.
