I recently have the nikon d5000, yes its old but it takes great pictures, I've been looking at the d90 from nikon and at the canon 60D i want to know if theirs a big diff in them even though their almost the same price. Which ones better and why?

Changing camera system brands costs just too much money.

Look at the D90, 60D and the included D3200 sensor performance

You don't upgrade dSLR's just because it's old. In fact most pros buy a new camera only when their old one dies. Those who do upgrade find a good reason to do so. It's usually a feature on the new model that's not available in the old one which they can't seem to live without since they know it's already existing.

The D5000 is old, yes but if you know exactly how to use it, you will get the same pictures you'll get with a new dSLR.

You shall not achieve that much of a Performance gain / Quality Gain if you change the body. The D5000 may be old but not that old that you need to change to a D90 (it is also old) and or a 60D and such. So here are other way of improving image quality with the same body.

1. If you shoot portrait/macro, buy a FLASH.
2. If you shoot portrait (weddings and such), buy better Prime Lens.
3. If you shoot landscape, get a f2.8 zoom lens.
4. Diffusers, reflectors, stands, softbox and a lot more… The list goes on.

Changing the body will NOT improve the quality of the image, higher MegaPixel doesn't count to better pictures. If you are dead set on a BODY then what you can do is move to a TRUE FULL FRAME camera such as the D700 or a D800 from Nikon. Your existing D5000 lens will be compatible and you will see a huge difference as your lens will now have no cropping and how you take pictures will improve.
