What brands of lenses are compatible with the Nikon D40 camera?

I found a Sigma macro lens the other day that I really, really liked; but I wasn't sure that it would fit my camera. I was wondering what brands of lenses would work with my Nikon D40.

Pretty much any brand lens will fit on the camera. Its all about the mount. Sigma does fit, you just need to get the Nikon mount version. 3rd party lenses do work. Hell, you could even put a canon lens on a nikon.

P.S. With a DX camera, you'll need a DX lens or a lens with a focusing motor inside the lens. Unless you're okay manual focusing all the time.

Sigma makes lenses for many different cameras, including Canon, Sony, Pentax, and of course Nikon. Make sure you get a lens that was built for the Nikon F-mount, or else it won't work at all.

If you want autofocus, make sure the Sigma lens also happen to have a "HSM" motor built-in, or else it won't autofocus.

Other third-party lenses that makes lenses for Nikon includes Tamron and Tokina. Most other brands such as Canon, Pentax, or Sony requires you to buy an extra adapter if you want to use their lenses on your D40.

Sigma and Tamron are you two bigger third party lens makers. They create the same lenses with different mounts. If that lens of yours says AF-S, or AF-I it will autofocus and have full functionality
