What are some of the better digital cameras? (Preferably under $600)?

My friend had a Nikon D60 and eventually got a Nikon D40. He takes amazing photos, but I would like to know what else is out there, before I go out and buy one.

Well the best ones are Nikon. Some are cheap some are not. I have one that cost me 220 or something like that but it stills takes great pictures…

Get a 2nd hand Nikon D80…
There are also Nikon D3000 & D3100 in options (if you go 1st hand). But instead of getting a D3100/D3000 its better if you can get D80 or a 2nd hand D5000… Instead of D40 its better if you can get the D40x next gen… But again its not the camera but the photographer who takes the pics…

Get the Nikon, not the 3000 but the D3100 with 18-55 kit lens for $600.

Later, as the need arises, you can invest in wide angle and tele lenses. Get to know the camera and have fun.

I'm a photographer and my one camera, the Canon Xs is wonderful! Fast shooting with easy to use controls it takes outstanding photos! It's great for beginners and runs around $400 the standard zoom lens works great while shooting macro, landscape, and people photos. And there are a multitude of awesome lenses to choose from Canon… Hope this was a help
