What are some good beginner filmmaking cameras?

Me and my brother both go to school. I'm a business major and he is a film major. Our goal once we graduate college in a year or so is to open up shop and become directors. We want to start making independent short films so we're looking for some good equipment. Currently we have the following:

Nikon D3200
Go Pro Hero 3+
Photoshop
After Effects
Sony Vegas

We would like to know if this is a good starting set up? We also want to get a new camera, one that is pretty cheep ($1,000) price limit. I have looked online but a lot of it is outdated. We need a camera comparable with external mics such as boom and shotgun mics. What cameras and equipment do you recommend?

Are you actually asking about "film" cameras or don't you know the correct term - video. Digital cameras don't shoot film so you can't use them for "film making". You can shoot video movies however.

First things first… Know this. For professional level equipment you don't have enough money. You can afford a good consumer level camera but they don't offer the features or quality of the professional level gear.

However, if you understand how to properly operate both camera and lens, and understand the extra gear you'll require, you can produce pretty good stuff with a dslr camera. I know because I did a career in broadcast television videography and am now a hobbyist and I use a Canon t3i. This camera is cheap enough at $600 that it would allow for the extra gear, mike, tripod, external view finder, etc., that you'll actually want to produce quality videos.

I don't use Sony Vegas but I understand it's a good editor. If you have the $700 version, to me, it had better be good for that money.

I would also say this. You're trying to break into a tough, cut throat business. There are hundreds of short movies made for everyone that sees the light of day. Know also that if you've got perhaps many years to invest in your goal, could be one day your work will be seen by someone with contacts… If you get my drift.
