Good camera for short filmmaking?
I'm looking for a camera with very good picture quality for shooting short films, sketches etc. I've been looking around on 'Which?' and other websites and though some seem very good, I wanted another opinion on here. As for the one's I've looked at, I've read up on the Nikon D7000 and Canon EOS 7D, which both seem like good quality and cameras and the kind of thing I'm looking for. My price range is from about £800 to no more than £1, 600 approximately, The main thing I want from this camera is high resolution and good picture quality. Also, very important that it's good for filming, as one of the issues with the Canon 7D seemed to be that filming used up a hell of a lot of memory, and it seemed to be more suited for shooting individual pictures. Anyway, let me know what your thoughts are, I'm very open to suggestions.
You have a bit of a problem. You write that you want to do films yet you're asking about digital cameras. It's not the same at all.
For film you'll need 16mm or 35mm camera equipment that's extremely expensive.
However with digital gear, which doesn't make films, they make videos.
Another thing you don't understand, all video uses a whole lot of memory. HD video has a very large foot print - no other way to put it. Any camera that shoots HD is going to use lots of memory regardless of make or model… So get used to that.
All the cameras you mention will do very nice video (not film) but will require lots of memory to make that happen. I shoot with a Canon t1i and I use 8gb / class 10 cards - the fastest currently available. You'll also need that speed for recording HD video.
Another thing - what's your computer's age? If it's more than 2 or 3 years old it may not play HD video because it's too slow - remember the huge foot print? That's the reason.
HD video isn't easy or cheap so expect lots of expenses to go with it.
