What all purpose lens to get for my Nikon D80?

I just sold my Nikkor 18-200 mm VR lens for my Nikon D80 camera. It was just too heavy for me. I need a lighter all purpose lens that has the same features as the 18-200 or close to it. I was thinking of the 18-105 VR. Any other suggestions? I don't want to spend more than $600.00 if possible.

Light and small lenses would be the 18-55 or 35 and 50 mm primes, all in the $100 to $200 range. The 18-105 will be moderately hefty (give it try at a photo store). You should have kept the 18-200 for those times when you need the extra reach and picked up the 18-55, or one of the primes, for a light weight/compact configuration.

Somebody got a good deal. I covet the 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G AF-S ED VR lens for my Nikon D90.

I can recommend the 18-105 as I have it. It makes a good walking around lens, almost as good as the 18-200 that you got rid of, and it only weighs 9.6 ounces.

I use the 18-105mm VR, and it's extremely sharp at all focal lengths. One major problem I have with it is very visible chromatic abberation (purple fringing) and distortion at 18mm, but that can be corrected later in software. Otherwise, it's a very very sharp lens and offers decent build quality for the price.
