What are some good UV filters for my Nikon D3100 kit lens?

I have used Hoya filters for my DSLRs and find them very good.

You can go for a Skylight 1 B or UV(0).

Hoya, from the same company that owns Pentax.

Hoya, Tiffen, Heliopan, B+W are all good brands.

I suggest buying your filters in a "thin" or "slim" mount to avoid any possibility of vignetting (dark corners on your image) at 18mm.

You'll also want a circular polarizer filter to darken a blue sky, enhance colors, and remove/reduce glare/reflections from glass, water, snow, sand and painted matal - but not polished metal.

The kit lens is very soft and prone to flare. If possible, don't use any filters with it. If you are clicking photos where there's sun or any bright light source in the frame, you'll get a lot of flare (even with the most expensive filter).

If you happen to be using this lens in very dusty conditions or near a sea beach, buy an inexpensive UV filter from any no-name company.

Think about it first, why would you want a UV filter? In some circumstances a lens hood will also provide protection and make your lens perform better.

If you do feel the need, go for a multicoated filter from hoya or b+w.http://maxsaver.net is very affordable

There are tons of filters, based on features and size, manufacturers and cost.

Your kit lens would be 18-55? If yes, its 58mm.

Here's a great tutorial on a site that guides you on which UV (and any other) filter to buy. It's already got Amazon links in and lots of explanation, here is it - http://www.the-dslr-photographer.com/2010/03/buying-lens-filter.html
