I want to upgrade from my Nikon D40! I have had it for about 2 years now and I'm looking for something newer and something more challenging! What Nikon camera should I upgrade to?

First ask yourself if you need a new camera. Remember, a new camera will not automatically get you better pictures.

Do you need better performance at high ISO's? Do you need more megapixels? Do you want to do video? Do you need a function like mirror up?

I know I need these things (as I also have the D40 and am looking to upgrade), with the exception of video (although it might be kind of cool for some stuff).

the logical upgrade would be either the Nikon D7000 or the Nikon D300s. Take a look at both cameras and see which one will suit you better. I myself would love to get the D7000 in the near future.

now, if you want a new camera for the sake of having a new camera, that is wrong. Instead, get a few more lenses to expand your shooting range. If all you have is the kit lens (18-55mm), get the 55-200 or 55-300 for extra range. Look at the 50mm f/1.4G lens for portraits and a superb low-light lens. The 35mm f/1.8 is a great landscape lens. An 85mm macro lens for up close photography.

ask yourself, do you really need a new camera?

The D40 is a nice camera. I see it selling for more than it did when it was new. A new camera you may want to look at is the D3100. If money isn't an issue, the D7000. The D7000 can take great quality videos. Just go to youtube and type in Nikon D7000 videos.

If I were you, I'd get the Nikon D90, which is about $899 with a 18 - 105mm lens. If you don't want to pay that much, get the D3100 (around $599), or the D5000 (around $630)
