Best flashes for a nikon d40x?

I currently have a nikon d40x. The flash stopped working and the screws are stripped, i found a way to fix the flash online but because of the screws i'm unable to fix it.
I'm just going to buy an external flash because it would cost less then sending it out to be fixed.
I would like a adjustable flash but anything at this point would be great. I usually take portraits if that helps at all. Please help me if you can!

Added (1). That flash looks fantastic, and if i can't find anything cheaper i would most likely save up for it.
but anything that is on the cheaper side (maybe less then 100) would be ideal. I know no flash is going to be perfect and under 100 i just need something to get me by with portraits

but if the nikon sb-400 is really the best and cheapest i can get i would absolutely buy it. I just need some help!

You can consider Nikon SB-400 AF Speedlight Flash
If you need a small flash that is a lot more powerful than the on-camera flash on your compatible Nikon camera, this is a great flash. More than anything, it's a better than on-camera flash that also has bounce capability, which none of the on-camera flashes do.
