SLR Nikon or canon for wild life photography?
I'm interested in wildlife photography now i'm using Sony point shoot camera but i want to movie on to SLR but i'm not able to choose between Nikon d3100 and canon 1100d. I'm more intrested in buying Nikon but when i see many wild life photographers using canon i get very much confused why they are using canon other than Nikon. I'm just a hobbyist photographer i don't want to be a pro?
I'm a canon user, just a hobbyist not a pro, but in my experince I've realized that it's just a question of personal taste so don't waste your time on this and buy what you like more.
Even i had the same misconception sometime back. But then i realized it aint so…
The thing is Canon White lens is more eyecatchy so when we see a photographer with a white lens, we know its a canonite.Canon almost puts it in your mind.lol… Also till some extent original Canon lenses are a bit cheaper compared to Nikon. To an extent i repeat.
Both D3100 & 1100D are nice entry level cameras… For wildlife you need a nice zoom lens.say a 70-300mm lens for starters…

Nikon has a reputation for faster auto-focus, but that might be a myth. I was at an airshow with a Canon user. He was using a 7D and I was using my D300. We were shooting an F-16 jet that was doing several fly-bys. He finally turned to me and asked if I was using auto-focus, because he gave up on auto-focus and just manually pre-focused. Now, I don't know how he had his camera set up, but maybe there was an auto-focus style that he had not discovered yet. We shoot race cars side by side and I respect his abilities. I'm just sayin'…
You can see a few of my F-16 photos here and judge the focus for yourself:

I'm not saying Nikon is better for wildlife than Canon, because I'm sure you can learn to use either one to its maximum potential with time. You are not going to go out on day one and catch a heron in flight with anything.
Canon / Nikon / Sony / Pentax / etc. - It comes down to personal, subjective taste. With the current state of D-SLR technology, If you buy a camera from one of the reliable manufacturers, the camera will compete with any camera in the same price range offered by any of the other reliable manufacturers.
These days it doesn't matter what brand of D-SLR you have in your hand, if your photos suck, it's you that's the problem - it's not the camera. If your photos aren't as good as the next guy's photos, it's because he's better than you, it's not because his camera is better than yours.
