If you're a beginner I would stick with the Nikon D3000 for now and get to know the settings because I'm a beginner too and I find even the Nikon D3000 to be confusing, and it's supposed to be for beginners.

Yes, you should definitely get the d3100. I use to have the d3000 but the d3100 takes so much better pictures and videos. It is worth the money and the has new features that the d3000 did not have such as video, live-mode, more mega pixels which results in better pictures, and higher ISO. I say you exchange it.

Unless there's a feature you need on the D3100 that is not on the D3000, there really is not a need to change. The picture quality difference is minuscule and what really matters is how you handle the camera.

the D3100 has video and live view- those are the major two differences between the two.

It really just depends on your needs. If you get bored with the D3000 or want something that offers a little more functionality, get the D3100. But if you're happy and are still figuring out your D3000, I'd keep it. And plus, if you don't upgrade you'll have $150 to spend. Maybe get yourself a new lens.
