Canon 550D to exchange with Nikon D300?

DaRkFoX

My friend has a Nikon D300 with firmware version 1.01 with 7000 shutter count. His setup includes

Tamron SP AF17-50mm F/2.8 XR Di II
Nikon 80-200mm f/2.8 AF-D
D300 Body…

My Setup is
Canon 550D with 18-55 Kit lens…
Metz 50 AF-1 Dedicated Flash

Do you think that its a good idea to exchange my setup with him? If yes how much money is a good deal for it? Or you suggest me to buy new lens and go with my own setup? Thanks

Added (1). Yes i'm sure for the shutter count. Because i know that machine since he bought. He was using this machine always on P mode and automatic.

Added (2). For 700$ paying extra over my setup

The question is what are you going to use your DSLR for?
Here is the rule of thumb, if you are more interested in doing "portrait photography", then you should stick with Canon EOS 550D.
However, if you are more interested in doing landscape photography, then you might consider exchange it to D300.
The reason behind is that Nikon always 'do' better for landscape because it produce more vivid color, but unfortunately the same advantage will look bad if you take a portrait picture of your friend for example, because it will "not" look soft and natural.

To me I'm a Canon enthusiast because I do portrait picture more than I do landscape.

As for the lens, its another story, you have a bargain coz you got 2 lenses (a 17-50mm and a 80-200mm) if you exchange it to Nikon, whereas yours only have 18-55 kit with you. It's tempting… Really tempting… :-P

IMHO, I will suggest you stick with your own setup and buy a lens that is suitable for you if you do a lot of portrait photography.

Are you sure it only has 7000 shutter cycles, not 70, 000?

if that is true he has not even broken the D300 in yet.

The two lenses he has certainly will provide you with a better range than you have now.

I don't understand why he would want to do such a thing?

Here are some shots I took recently using a D300 with the ISO set to 3200

NOTE: Exchange infers that you are trading straight across.

Sure if you can afford a Canon EF 17-50 mm f/2.8 ($1, 180) and 70-200 mm f/2.8 lens ($1, 450 or more), stick with the Canon, but I doubt that the 550D sensor performs as well in low light as the D300
