Remote for my Nikon d3100?

Can I only use the remote with the wires? I went to a store to buy a remote for my Nikon d3100 and they told me I can't use the wireless remote because it gave no signal to my Nikon d3100? I don't really like the remotes with the wires but they said it was the only remote I could use.
and like my d3100 is fairly new and updated like it only came out a year ago.so? Is this true!
can I not use the wireless remote?

The workers at the store were correct - the D3100 isn't compatible with wireless remotes.

That is one of the goofy things that Nikon did. The D3000, which was the D3100's predecessor could use a ML-L3 wireless remote (although you had to buy it separately), but did not have the provision for a wired remote.
But with the D3100, Nikon added the capability for a wired remote, but took away the wireless remote function.
However, most DSLR owner's I think would prefer a wired remote. And you can buy a set of Yongnuo RF-603s (make sure you buy the one for your camera that has the correct cable), and you can connect one device to the camera's wired remote terminal, and use the other unit up to 100ft away.
These use RF (Radio Frequency) rather than IR that the D3000 used, so other than having to hook it up, you can get a much longer range with the RF-603s
