When you say "remote", do you mean remote shutter release?
If so, you need to have the Nikon MC-DC2 Remote Release Cord.

The only remote available for the D3100 is a wired remote. For some strange reason, Nikon went from an IR remote to a wireless remote when the D3100 replaced the D3000.
Just look for a MC-DC2 compatible remote. You can buy them for as little as $6, and they simply plug into the side of the camera. There's no setup needed.
