Best Wired Remote for D3100? W/ Manual Controls on Remote?

I've owned my D3100 for about 6 months now, and I've started to want to be able to use a remote more and more. The problem is, Nikons' remote: https://www.nikonusa.com/...eter).html doesn't seem to have too many functions for $35.

I was looking at this remote: http://amzn.to/...to/12pLS7l Which seems to have a lot more options on it. I'm not sure if it makes a huge difference there, but back to the original question.

What's the best remote I could buy for my D3100 that has some functions built right into the remote, and is programmable to some extent? I'd like to do several 30-second exposures to shoot things like stars and such, but obviously that's not really an option without a remote that you can tell to take several shots over a set period of time.

Wired remotes have only two functions at most - Shutter release and autofocus activation. At most times, it's integrated into one button just like the one on the camera itself. This design is in following with the old shutter release cable found in old mechanical film SLR cameras that only had shutter release as its function.

The link you have provided is for an intervalometer, a totally different animal compared to the remote control. Although almost similar, this beast includes a programmable timer that can take shots at predetermined intervals of time. You can't control aperture, shutter time, ISO and white balance with this device. This is the right tool you need for taking multiple shots of the sky. If you only need to take one, this is not required. The link below is an example of a startrails shot without the use of an intervalometer.
