Recommendation for good Nikon lenses for DSLR Cameras?

I have recently bought a Nikon D7000 with a 18-105 lens. I require a better zoom lens. Can anyone recommend a Nikon lens with a better zoom, preferable one that is not too expensive?

What "better" zoom lens you buy will have all to do with the subjects you tend to shoot

Here is a tool that will help you determine what focal lengths you my need

And this is a list of available lenses. All good lenses are going to be rather expensive. My 200-400 mm cost over $6, 000, but no other lens can do what it does

For a better zoom range, the best bargain out there's the 18-200mm zoom, which goes from moderate wide angle to medium telephoto. Another good one if you are just looking to bring things in closer is the 55-300mm lens.

The sky is the limit in terms of prices. Some fast and powerful telephotos can run over $10, 000, but then you would want a professional body to match it.

There are quite a few better zoom lenses, and it does depend on what you plan on photgraphing.

For general purpose the 17-55mm f2.8 is a good choice, and the 70-200mm f2.8 is good for events. If you need specialist long lenses, then the 200-400 is second to none.

Depends on what you want to photograph and how much you want to spend. Couple of things to remember. You can use any lens made since about 1977 onwards as it can handle AI lenses - you won't get autofocus though unless you have an AF lens. This means that you can scour ebay for some really nice bargains. A better zoom? Well, if you don't want to spend a fortune, the old 80-200mm f4-5.6 AF D lens is quite good. Light, sharp and nicely balanced. In the Uk these can be bought used at around £70. If you want something bigger, the 200-400mm zoom is nice, but has a nice price tag as well. Not much point in chopping in your 18-105mm zoom. It covers a wide range and is reasonably bright. You might want to invest in a nice 50mm f1.4 AI lens though for general use. You won't get a much brighter, lighter lens. Other candidates - the 70-210 AFD zoom is also highly rated. Ok so it's an f4 -5.6 again, but the autofocus is fast. Sigma did a nice AF version of the 200-400mm zoom - an f4 lens, so indecently bright for that magnification.

My favourite lens at the moment is an old 28-85mm f3.5 - 4.5 AF macro zoom. Focuses down to 8", which by the time you subtract the distance from front of lens to film plane means you wind up about 3" away from the subject. Fabulous bit of kit - I picked up mine secondhand for a mere £50. I also have a 35mm Vivitar f2.8 and a 90-230mm zoom that will sit happily on Nikon digitals. Oh and I also have the 80-200mm I mentioned earlier. Means I can run from 28mm through to 230mm with only two lenses.

Many would suggest you abandon your current zoom and just buy the 18-200mm Nikon zoom and then tack on the 200-400mm for a bit more range.PM me if you want more details
