Nikon 18-70mm or Nikon 18-105? Or another recommendation?

I'm looking into purchasing a refurbished/used one of these lenses. I'm going to assist in shooting a wedding for my aunt. Which of the two would be the best for me? I also am a casual photographer, I take pictures of people, nature, and street photography, or pretty much anything that interests me. I have an 18-55mm AFS VR already I got as part of my kit with my D5100. Please share any info or any other recommendations!

The 18-105mm VR seems to have an advantage in features, with more zoom range and the addition of VR.

The 18-105mm seems to have more chromatic aberration. Back when people were putting the 18-70mm on their Nikon D70 that was important. With the D5100 processor correction for chromatic aberration can circumvent that deficiency in the 18-105mm.

If you want to add another lens, try getting one that doesn't overlap your existing lens if you are concerned in extending focal range. Get something like a 55-200mm or a 75-300mm. For weddings, the 18-55mm is perfectly good enough. What you will need more though is an external flash.

I own both.

I got the 18-70mm when I bought my D70 (that my youngest son now has), and the 18-105mm with my D90.

The 18-70mm, even though it does not have VR, is actually a better lens; it has superior optics, better construction with a metal mounting ring (the 18-105 is plastic), and is just a great performer.

VR really is not required at these focal lengths anyway, and if you can live with the loss of a few millimeters (70 vs 105), then the 18-70 is the better of the two lenses.

VR works great to compensate the hand shake and add extra stop for low light conditions.
Auto focus is very good.
Color contrast is good.
