Nikon low aperture (f/1.8) zoom lens?
So I'm buying a lens, and i really feel like buying a lens with a really low f stop number, like around f/1.8 but i also want to zoom in and out. I've googled it up and all i find is lenses that are fixed zoom. The camera I have is a Nikon D3000 and the lens i have is: AF-S NIKKOR 18-55mm 1:3.5-5.6G DX VR. Ireally love it, but I'm linking really shallow depth of field. So All I NEED IS A Really LOW f/ STOP NUMBER AN BEING ABLE TO ZOOM. Please be helpful, I'm really trying to get help here.
There's no such thing as a zoom lens with a maximum aperture of f /1. 8. The largest aperture you will find in a zoom lens is f/2.8… And those are quite expensive. Of course if you really understood basic photography, you would know that you don't necessarily need a really large aperture to create a shallow depth of field.
Everything wider than f/2.8 is going to be a prime (non zoom) lens.
The 50mm f/1.8 is a decent economical lens for low depth of field.
The best you will get is f2.8 on a zoom - but expect to pay for it, and there's no such thing as a 'fixed zoom'.
Look on the Nikon website for a good example of lenses you may find the lens simulator useful and learn the appropriate terminology.
Also be careful with your wording f1.8 - while it is a smaller number than say f22, --- f1.8 is a wider or larger aperture and f22 is a small aperture.
Your current lens is a zoom but not a telephoto - so the effect you might be looking for, say a football player in focus and everything else is blurred, is achieved with a much longer focal length lens.
I suggest you read some basic books which will explain lenses and depth of field etc I think it would be better if you understand these basics first before you buy another lens. I may prove to be cheaper in the long run.
