What's the highest aperture you can get on a standard zoom lens for Nikon SLR?
I've been looking around for a standard zoom lens, something similar to a 12-60mm, that has a high apeture. It seems the highest f stop is 2.8, does a standard zoom lens exist with an f stop of 1.8 or 1.4, or am I just dreaming…
Not that I know of.f/2.8 is as good as it gets on zooms.
You might be interested in the 85mm f/1.4 lens, though.
"Highest" isn't usually used for aperture values.
If you're talking about a "fast" lens (which means the lens has a low value for the focal ratio, f/2.8 or so), then zoom lenses usually max out around f/2.8. There are a few faster zooms, down to about f/2, but they're rare and expensive.
If you want f/1.8 or 1.4, you're going to need to go to a prime (fixed focal length) lens, not a zoom.
There's no zoom lens that I know of that is faster than f2.8. You can get prime lenses like the 50mm f1.4 and 85mm f1.4
