Nikon lens 50mm 1.8 or 35mm 1.8?

I just got the 50mm 1.8 for Christmas. Now, that i'm playing with it and reading about it a lot of people would rather use the 35mm. I have a D3000 and the 50mm does not auto focus, but I would mainly use it to do portraits. I have 2 other lenses 18-55m and 55-200mm, which don't give me sharp clear images, thats why I wanted the 50mm. Which would you recommend?

It doesn't matter what other people use, YOU are the artist, so use the lens that best creates your vision.

The 50mm on a d3000 is a great lenght for portraiture, 35mm or 50mm depends on what you shoot, what do you shoot?

If you can't get sharp clear images out of a 18-55 or 55-200 you're doing something wrong. I've got a 18-55 and find it sharp enough:

As to 35 versus 50, well, you've got a 18-55 that covers both. Set it to 35mm and use it for a few hours without touching the zoom ring. Do the same at 50 and see which one you prefer.

Is the 50mm lens a digital lens or a film lens? What about the 35mm?

The ideal portrait focal length is something in the 7-135mm length (film).

Your 18-55mm zoom lens covers the 50mm digital focal length - which is equivalent to a 75mm film focal length. That's a good lens for portraiture.

Your 55-200mm lens also could be used for portraiture. It's 55mm focal length is equivalent to 82.5mm in film.

So my opinion is that you didn't need the 50mm lens for portraiture. The 35mm lens is too wide for portraiture, regardless of whether it's intended for film or digital.

Why does your 18-55mm lens not give you "sharp clear images"? Do you have a vibration reduction function on the lens? If so, you should turn it on. Otherwise, put your camera on a tripod. If the lens is still not sharp - take it back to the dealer, it's defective.
