So I got a nikon d80 and it stopped taking pictures… I press the button and the lens only zooms in and out but didn't take a picture… The battery is charged too

This sometimes happens if the camera can't focus - it won't shoot if it can't get a clear image.

Try shooting manually.

Do you mean focus in and out? This camera does not have a power zoom lens.

If it is focus, there are limits to how well any camera can focus. If you are too close or if it is too dark, the camera may have trouble focusing.

The minimum focus distance depends on the lens you have, and could be anywhere from 1 to 5 feet.

So try the following:

Go outside on a bright sunny day. Put the camera into AUTO mode on the main dial. Focus on something at least 10ft away.

If the camera will take a photo, then everything is OK. If not, there may be a problem with it.

You can also try to put the lens into manual focus (there should be a manual switch on the lens for this), then manually focus the lens by rotating the ring on the lens. If you have a zoom lens, there will be two rings to adjust - one for the zoom function and one for the focus.

Figure out which one is the focus and manually focus until the photo looks in-focus in the viewfinder, then try to take a photo.

If you can take a photo - then either your focus system is broken or you are just not using the camera under the right conditions. If it still won't work - then the camera is bad.

Also for low light conditions, there's a focus assist lamp - basically a light that the camera uses to illuminate dark areas so it can focus. It might be turned off in the menu, so see if that is so

DSLR's will show you error messages when there actually is an issue with the camera or the lens. If you are trying to focus on something that has no contrast (like a white or black wall) then the camera will not take a picture if it can't "see" what your trying to focus on.

Switch the camera to manual focus mode and manually focus on something. Also look on your cameras lens for closest focusing distance. It should be on the bottom of the lens in meter's. If your lens has a focus scale then your closest focus distance will be on the scale.

If you try and focus on something that's past the lenses closest focus distance then the lens won't be able to lock focus. As such the lens will "hunt" or focus from infinity to its closest focus distance.

I'm going to go out on a limb here, but do you have your SD memory card in the camera? If you removed it, the D80 is programmed to lockup when you try to take a photo. There's a workaround that's really only useful for trying the camera out when it's on display, but a properly formatted memory card will unlock your camera.
