Why does r11 show up on my Nikon d80? Hello, I have a problem with my Nikon d80 -?

Having lost the manual I wondered if anyone could help.
What happens it that sometimes with the lens not extended the shutter gets stuck and won't take a picture and I get an r11 symbol on the digital readout.
Can anyone tell me if this is a major fault I need to take in and pay money to get fixed or am I missing something that I can do to fix it. Or is it meant to do it under certain conditions.

Continued the search. Found a solution. If a setting in the menu item does not work, it's a lens problem.
