D5000
Sensor Size = 15.8 x 23.6mm
Total Pixels = 12.9 million
Effective Pixels = 12.3 million

D3100
Sensor Size = 23.1 x 15.4mm
Total Pixels = 14.8 million
Effective Pixels = 14.2 million

The D3100 has more megapixels but the D5000 has bigger sensor.

I believe bigger sensor means better shooting in low light.

Lets us just consider the still images… Mainly because that is the most important.

D90 is already too high… So just between the D3100 and the D5000.

please tell other important things to consider…

The bigger sensor is not THAT big either. It is just big enough to take care of the increased pixels.
Here is a side by side specs;

Apart from specs, the advantage of D3100 is that it has been designed keeping the requirements and needs of absolute beginners in mind. It has a lot more functions and guides to help the user to use the DSLR with ease. It would replace both D3000 and D5000 to be Nikon's entry level camera.
