Nikon D5000 and SB-600?

I have a doubt here in my mind. I'm using Nikon D5000 and just bought my SB-600 speedlight. I wonder can I use the built-in flash in my D5000 to trigger off the SB-600 as wireless slave flash? I know D5000 has no commander mode, but I ever tried it with Nissin speedlight before and it's successful. So, I want to know can it works with SB-600 too? If yes, how to set the mode? Please, I need to know this.

You need the commander mode. The commander mode has a communications protocol. The Nissin probably responds to just a flash of light.
If you want to get the flash off camera for cheap, you can use a cable to connect the flash to the camera and preserve the TTL functions. If you want a longer cable, I have heard of people lengthening the cable. Nikon sells the SC-28. There are third party companies that sell something similar for 1/3 the price.

There are also cheesy radio remotes, but your you need to use the flash in manual mode. There are a few web sites that show how to modify the cheap remotes to make them work more reliably.

No it should not be able to trigger it since it doesn't have commander mode. You will have to get and use an sb700, sb800 (not sold new anymore), su800 (not sure if able to buy new or not), or sb900 flashes to be able to do that. I highly recommend this DVD to help with flash photography: Nikon School Presents: Guide to the Creative Lighting System.find it on amazon.com. Hope this helps!

The SB600 has a built-in slave function.

You're correct, the D5000 does not support Nikon CLS, which is the only way to trigger the SB-600 wirelessly without additional hardware.

OK, come on people this is not difficult.

Anything below D70/80/90 does NOT have a commander. So, no CLS without an sb-800/sb-900 or su-800 in the hotshoe of the lower cameras (like the d5000)

Simple, isn't it?

Now your nissin probably has an optical trigger built in, nikon did that on the old sb-26. Your nissin "sees" a flash and joins in the fun. The current crop of nikon flashes can't do that. It needs a true commander
