Decent, sharp lens for under $600? For use around architecture and portraits. Nikon D5100?
Going to Jordan for a month. I only own a 18-55mm kit, and a 70-300 VR2. No use in jordan. I need a decent lens for architecture and landscapes (long exposures and HDRS mostly.)
Keep in mind, it has to have an AF monitor because my camera doesn't. Which is why i omitted the nikkor 18-35, which seemed perfect. Also, I would prefer Nikkor as it seems sharper than third party lenses, though i'm open to a different brand if they have image quality comparable to Nikkor.
You're never going to find a lens that can do both portrait and architecture focal lengths and yet do them both really well. If you're a stickler for IQ, I'd get a 50mm f1.8G Nikon lens for the portraits, spend the rest on a Tokina 12-24mm f4.0 for architectural shots. This should fit within your budget (barely).
This Tokina lens compares quite well with the Nikon version in terms of IQ. It apparently has slower autofocus, but this doesn't matter in architecture photography.
