Nikon D50. Direct B/W?

Is there any way to take B/W shots directly from the camera?

No. You have to post-process.

From what I have researched you would have to convert the image on a computer. There's no in-camera black & white mode.

No it won't but it's no bad thing, you get the best B&W by taking colour images then converting in post processing. The in camera ones are either a grey-scale or de-saturated colour Image in camera, probably the worst B&W conversions you can do. They are flat and lacking contrast.
