Nikon D40? Can i see it at a store?

I want a Nikon d40 for christmas, but its discontinued. Will it be a bad idea to buy it without holding it and stuff?(i hear you should see the camera in person before buying)?
also if i do get this cameras, about how much do lenses cost. I'm only 13, don't exactly have a lot of money

I think you should go with Nikon D40 6.1MP Digital SLR Camera
6.1-megapixel CCD captures enough detail for photo-quality 14 x 19-inch prints
Kit includes 3x 18-55mm f3.5-5.6G ED II AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor lens
2.5-inch LCD with three display options; built-in flash and hot shoe
Fast startup with instant shutter response; shoot at up to 2.5 frames per second
Powered by one rechargeable Li-ion battery EN-EL9 (included); stores images on SD memory cards (memory card not included)

Do some internet searching, good chance you can find one for a price where not holding it is no big issues. If you're in the market for something that old I'd advice you to broaden your search to include a d50 as well.
With a bit of luck you can find a kit for just under $300. Lenses, well, something like a VR-less 55-200 can be had for less than 100 bucks. Something like a 200-400mm zoom you'll have to fork out $6000 and there's all sorts in betweeen.
