Nikon D3100 and Photoshop?

If shooting in Raw (NEF) on the D3100 the file that is made is not compatible with Photoshop (CS4-Mac). Does anyone know a way I can get around this?

Nikon should offer a raw driver for your os on their support site.

Because CS4 came out before the D3100 and the Camera Raw 6.3 from Adobe is the one that reads D3100…
if CS4 doesn't support Camera RAW 6.3, then you'll have to upgrade to CS5…

The previous poster is right, CS4 doesn't support it, but you don't have to upgrade to CS5. Although you can no longer update CS4 with the most recent cameras and other tweaks, you can download the Adobe DNG converter which will convert you NEF raw files to DNG Raw files and CS4 will read those. You are still working with a raw file, it's just converted to a photoshop standard raw file.

You can download the free DNG converter from the Adobe site

The second on in the list on the above page. There's no point in you downloading the ver 6.5 Raw converter as that will only work with CS5.
Once the files have been converted to DNG any version of PS above CS2 can open them, but it's an extra step every time. Or you can use it to convert them to 16bit Tiff which is also lossless.
Elements 9 uses the same Raw Converter as CS5 and is not too expensive.
A free alternative is Raw Therapee

Photoshop it's not, but it is free
Another free alternative is Gimp

If you are a student you can upgrade CS4 to CS5 pretty cheaply (about the same as buying Elements 9), its £186 if your not a student, but to be honest it's worth it, the Content Aware Fill, the new selection tools and a better HDR alone make it a worthwhile upgrade.

When Adobe Photoshop CS4 fails to play nice, and you don't have the stomach to pay for yet another update, try GIMP - http://www.gimp.org/.../macintosh
GIMP has various RAW conversion options that play nicely with your D3100 NEF files. Try - UFRAW, or RawTherapee, or even Photivo (my absolute favourite). Http://photivo.org/photivo/download_and_setup
In fact, since it also works as a standalone application, you could even use photivo to process to a 16bit tiff, which you could then open in Photoshop.
Stuff Adobe.

Download video conversion software. Google it
