I just recently got a Nikon d3100 and want to know what kind of lens to get if I want more zoom. I have the normal lens that it usually comes with but what else can i get if I want to zoom even closer?

Anything that's 150mm or more in focal length.

The 70-300mm or a 55-200mm would do for starters.

No offense, but if you can't pick a new lens on your own, then you don't understand some very important aspects about your DSLR camera. Go get a couple books about DSLR cameras and lenses and read them. One of the books should be "Understanding Exposure." If we just recommend a lens, you will not have learned how to use your camera/lenses any better. On the other hand, if you educate yourself to the point of being able to pick your own lenses, your photography skills will greatly improve.

A great 1st addition will be a lens that zooms up to 250 or 300mm
So a 55-250 or 70-300mm will do what you want.

More zoom? Either the Nikkor AF-S 18-200 mm VR or AF-S 28-300 mm VR will give you that

More closeup shots? A prime macro lens (NOT a zoom) will provide you with amazing close ups. Options: AF-S 60 mm f/2.8, AF-S 85 mm f/3.5 or AF-S 105 mm f/2.8

You seem a beginner in DSLR photography, so you can go for either AF-S DX 55-200 VR or AF-S DX 55-300 VR. (VR stand for Vibration Reduction which compensates for camera shakes.)
And these two lenses will greatly compliment your 18-55 VR lens as these starts from where your kit lens ends, ie at 55mm)

I'll suggest to go for AF-S DX 55-300mm VR, It gives you an extra reach by 100mm, it has 2 ED (extra dispersion) glass elements which gives u high contrast, punchier and sharper pics than 55-200mm VR which has got just 1 ED element.

I have personally tested both the lens, 55-300mm VR is a better performer in every aspect except price. If you have limited budget then 55-200 is a good lens for its price, else 55-300 is the way to go!
