Why is the Nikon 70-200mm zoom lens more expensive than the 55-300mm?

I've been looking at zoom lenses for my nikon d5100 and i was curious why the 70-200 is far more expensive than the 55-300 lens. What is the difference between the lenses? It seems to me that the 55-300 would have much better range than the other. Please clear this up for me.

Taylor as mentioned most of it.

The other is that the 70-200 mm f/2.8 covers the full 24 x 36 mm sensor on a full frame camera. DX lenses cost less to make because they only have to cover a APS-C sensor and of course the 55-300 mm lens is a special economy lens made for those who do not have the budget to buy the more advanced, fast lenses used by the pros

If you visit a proper camera shop and hold both lenses in your hands, you will see that the 70-200 mm f/2.8 lens weighs about 55 ounces and the 55-300 only weighs about 20 ounces. Most of that weight difference is in the glass used in the lens

Constant 2.8, superior build quality, superior AF motor, superior glass, superior everything except affordability. Just get the 55-300 or 55-200.
