My Nikon D40's flash is broken, will buying a new flash solve the problem?
So I saw a tutorial on how to fix it, but the hook that makes the flash work is broken. I did research and repair would cost over $200! And I don't have that kind of money!
So I was wondering if buying a new flash is the way to go? Is this a good idea even if the internal flash is broken?
Also, what flash would you guys recommend? I was looking at some really cheap ones like ring flashes and slave flashes. I don't want anything fancy, just something to replace my broken flash.
Yes, you can buy a nice Nikon SB400
Yes, getting an external flash will solve the problem when taking in low light situations. The cheapest ones are generic (only one electrical terminal under the flash foot) and are really cheap. Vivitar is one brand that makes them. You can use the flash in Manual or Auto mode with the camera in Manual mode. Just set the camera to the fastest flash sync shutter speed then follow whatever's written on the back of the flash for the aperture size. You may need to adjust aperture size up or down to suit your taste. If you don't like to be bothered by manual settings, get a more expensive TTL flash for Nikon cameras. Make sure the flash manual explicitly mentions it being compatible to the D40. You wouldn't want the camera's flash shoe getting busted by wrong voltage capacities.
