Is my camera broken or is my lens broken?

Nikon D5000.It has a 18-55 mm af-s Nikkor lens. Whenever I try to use it it says "non-cpu lenses can be used in manual mode only". I have to switch my camera to M for it to work. It SHOULD be working in auto though. When I use my 55-200 mm lens I have no problems using auto though. So is it my camera's fault it fails to recognize my 18-55 as a cpu lens or is it the lens? Or both?

Added (1). Didn't help. Obviously why I'm asking it again. I want to make sure my camera isn't messed up along with the lens.

This is the third time you've asked this question and I answered you the first time.

Sorry I misread the question before!

I checked that lens and I see it is an auto-coupled, auto focus lens. As one lens works OK, and the second one is telling you that its a 'non' cpu' lens it would appear that the lens is either faulty in its electronics or the coupling point contacts are not making a good circuit.

Either way looks as if the lens is at fault.

Sometimes the contacts of the lens can get a bit of dirt on them. You can try to use a pencil eraser and very carefully lightly rub the contacts on the lens - then reinstall it and see if the lens is recognized by the camera.

Since your other lens works, I'd guess your 18-55mm lens has a problem, and not the camera.
