Missing nikon d50 slr battery door?

My nikon slr camera is missing its battery door… This may seem like a stupid question but i'm gonna ask anyway. My camera is not working it won't turn on or anything even when i hold the battery up in its slot as far as i can… Is the reason my camera not working just because its missing the battery door. Or is there something far worse wrong with it?

Ì just tried it with my old D50. You have to firmly push and hold the battery in the compartment all the way up and then it still takes a second or two to switch on again.
Nikon in my country sells battery doors, only 8 euros.http://www.nikonservice.nl/shop/product_info.php?cPath=28_29_66_37&products_id=80 so perhaps they do in your country as well.
It's the same door as on the D70 and D100 by the way
