Looking to move past my entry-level DSLR?
I bought a nikon d3100 (mostly only use for video) as an affordable dslr while I was still in highschool. Two years later, I'm graduated and going to film school! I want to upgrade my camera but don't know what would be best. I don't have a particular preference as to nikon/canon. The camera I have now was good for basic shots and things of that nature but I want to move on to something with higher quality and that has more features. I have about $1, 000 that I can spend.
Why did you post your question twice in the same minute?
What is your current camera not doing that you think a more expensive camera will do?
A D3100 is more than capable of doing the same thing as my D300 when it's in the hands of a competent photographer who knows what they are doing. There's no reason to upgrade your camera. With only $1, 000 to spend you are better off getting a couple quality lenses instead of a new camera.
To be honest if you are filming only you should get some good lenses for that money. I mean Nikons are made for Photos and filming is an nice extra.
I have the D7000 and the only difference would be higher ISO at a lower noise level. But if you can live with the ISO/noice of your D3100 you should keep it. Buy a nice f/1.8 or 1.4 lens, a steady-cam or so.
You have a 14 MP dSLR. How is that holding you back?
If you are not producing quality images, it is not the camera's fault. There may be some very specific things the camera does not excel at, high speed shot sequences for sports, ultra wide angle photography due to the crop sensor, but that is about it. If you want to improve your photography, but a professional grade lens for the $1, 000 in whatever range you shoot the most. Clear optics and a wide open aperture will do a lot more for you than a small incremental upgrade is sensor performance.
