Looking To Get A New Camera, Any Suggestions?

So, I'm thinking about buying a new camera. I definitely want a DSLR. I was actually looking at a Nikon D7000. Would that be a smart move? I guess I'm asking for reviews on it. And if not, then what kind of camera is a good one? I preferably only want to spend about $1500 - $2000ish.

My personal preference:

for a DSLR, I prefer Nikon because the parts are easily available in my area, especially the lenses from third party like Tamron and Sigma, which can save me more money than buying the original Sony or Pentax lenses. Pentax and Sony lenses are just difficult to acquire in my area.

I would recommend the Nikon D3100 or D5000. They have a very easy user friendly guide that was designed for beginners. But, if you are confident enough, the D7000 is a good camera to grow on.

A good camera is one that feels good in your hands with easy to operate controls and menus. Both Nikon and Canon make good cameras. When I switched to a DSLR, I tried the various models in both Nikon and Canon, but I liked the ergonomics and menu system of the Canon better. A fellow photog is the opposite, he likes the Nikon feel better.

The best thing to do is visit a local camera shop and try the different makes and models out. At a camera shop, you can walk around the store trying each one out. It's one thing to just pick up a camera at a counter… It is another to walk around with it (especially if you put a 70-200 pro lens on it).

As well as reviews go to a store and try the cameras out for yourself.

That said the D7000 is a very nice camera and I don't think you'd be dissapointed.

For the same money as the D7000 (around £1000 in the UK) you could also have a look at:-

Canon 60D
Pentax K-5
Nikon D300s

Or for a little bit more:-

Canon 7D
Olympus E-3

It's a good camera with very good capabilities. Just don't be one of those idiots that use high-end DSLR cameras in auto mode. If you do, I might very well have to go up to you and confiscate your camera. Haha jk, but seriously you should really learn how to use it in the P, A, S, and M modes.
