Looking for new DSLR camera, any suggestions?

Right now I have a Canon Powershot S3IS
It's okay, but sometimes the pictures are grainy, blurry, the focus is if-y. I'm just not 100% happy with it.

I've been looking at Nikons. I've been researching the nikon d3100.
Any suggestions?

I ONLY WANT OPINIONS FROM PEOPLE WHO HAVE DSLR CAMERAS, I DON'T CARE ABOUT YOUR POINT-AND-SHOOT CAMS.

I own two Canon dslr cameras and they're both excellent. I particularly like my t1i - shots and video is just what I wanted. I highly recommend any of the t-line rebels. You may find the t3i to your liking.

We need to know what your budget is to determine what could be suitable for you. But in any case, the Nikon D3100 is a good beginner camera. It has nice features like in-camera photo effects and video recording. It's pretty much the first/cheapest Nikon's to feature the video mode. If you like video, the D3100 is a good way to start. If you have a bigger budget, there's also the D5000 and D5100 both with articulating screens and video recording.

On the other hand, there's the Canon T1i which is also a very good beginner's camera. I personally have owned one and I wish I could get another. I really like the LCD screen resolution because I get to see with a lot of detail how a photo is. But if it doesn't bother you then you can't go wrong with either Canon or Nikon.

To compare, it seems like the Nikon D3100 is a better low-light performer than the Canon T1i but the Canon wins in the video recording category by a hair. The upside for Nikon is the auto-focus during video recording. The Canon T1i can actually do the same with the press of a button but I don't know why people mark Canon down for it. I chose T1i over D3100 because of the video recording. If I were to choose which I think would be the better photo performer, it would probably be the Nikon.

I've never owned a Nikon, but to be realistic and unbiased, the Nikon D3100 is the possible winner for beginner camera over the T1i.Am I happy with my Canon T1i? Yes I'm and I wouldn't trade it for a Nikon D3100. We just have our own personal preferences and you will have yours. Mine just turned out to be the LCD screen resolution among other things.

If you like video recording, here are some good cameras to look at:
Canon T1i, T3, T2i
Nikon D3100, D5000

Of course there's more but costs a lot more.

If you can't get decent shots consistently with a Powershot, you won't get decent shots consistently with a dSLR either. Powershots are the easiest to use point-and-shoot cameras ever. DSLRs are the the most difficult.

THAT IS AN OPINION FROM A PERSON WITH FIVE DSLRS.

Want to try one more time? During the day, go outside. Set your Powershot to Auto, lowest ISO and EV 0. If you don't have any of those settings, ignore it. Do a head shot. Never mind if the top is incomplete, just make sure you get the face with a complete chin. Turn your subject until you find the right light. It's usually sunlight bouncing off something like the wall or a tree before hitting your subject's face. The light is subdued and doesn't make harsh shadows. Use zoom to get near and avoid your shadow on the subject. Put your subject's head to the left or right of the frame not dead center. It would be great if the background were considerably far from the both of you. Now take a shot. If you get that wrong, never hold a camera ever again.

Nikon D3100 is an excellent model, but just one thing - all DSLRs perform good and image quality is 99% the same.

Here's a DSLR Buying Guide - http://www.the-dslr-photographer.com/2009/11/which-dslr-to-buy/

The D3100 is a nice beginner camera. It has a GUIDE function that serves as a tutorial in-camera, so you don't have to carry your manual around if you are stuck and not sure what to do.

That kind of sets it apart from other DSLRs.

Nikon D3100 is a phenomenal deal for non professionals, the rest of us people that want to take family and travel shots. I've owned DSLRs since 2004, starting with a Nikon D70 and then moving to D40, D200 and Canon Digital Rebel XSi 12.2 MP Digital SLR Camera with EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens (Black) and Canon EOS 40D 10.1MP Digital SLR Camera (Body Only). Those are all excellent cameras, but this Nikon D3100 is better than all of those in one crucial area, the area that matters: it takes excellent pictures without having to fiddle with the settings between shots.
