Lens Compatibility with Close-Up Macro Filter?
I have a Nikon D7000 with a Nikon 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G VR II DX ED AF-S Zoom Lens. I was thinking about purchasing a 1 +1 +2 +4 +10 Close-Up Macro Filter Set. I've never used a macro filter before so I'm not sure if they are compatible with my lens. So, will my lens support a macro filter? If not, why? If so, are macro filters useful or does the camera lens do a good enough job without needing additional magnification? Note - I like doing macro photography (flowers, insects, etc.). Any insight will be helpful. Thanking you in advance for your time.
Depends on the filter thread size that the close up lenses are for. Your lens has a 72mm filter thread size, so you'd need close up lenses for that size. Those may be difficult to get, as that's not the most common size of lenses of people who use close up lenses in first instance.
Be warned, such close up lenses will give you terrible image quality. There's a reason why people pay $500+ for real macro lenses. You might get off cheaper with extension tubes though, which will improve the close focus limit of your lens without deleterious effect on the optical quality.
Technically, close-up filters AREN'T macro lenses… They are a form of magnification, nothing more… And not very good…
you would be better off with a macro lenses and extension tubes for something special…
your lens will allow for close-ups but only within the realm of the lenses abilties and you might find they aren't suitable for what you want…
Jens and FH are correct. When it comes to almost anything in the world, you get what you pay for… AND photography is NOT a cheap hobby or profession.
